Ramiz Jamal Wins 2016 California State Fair Amateur

Huntington Beach native Ramiz Jamal captured the 92nd California State Fair by three shots on Labor Day Monday with a final round 66 played at the MacKenzie Golf Course at Haggin Oaks.

Jamal, a sophomore at UC Irvine, entered the final round at 7-under par one shot back of Ben Corfee, Bryan Wise, and Patrick Murphy.

“I told myself before the round that if I lose, someone is going to have to beat me. I’m not beating myself,” said Jamal.

Jamal certainty didn’t beat himself, he stayed present in his own game and played the first 16 holes bogey-free and 4-under par. It was on the walk to his 2nd shot on hole 17 that he saw the leaderboard of the final pairing showing only single-digit scores. At 11-under, Jamal knew he had at least a two-shot lead with two par 5’s to play. Two testy up and downs for birdie closed the door on the rest of the field and capped off Jamal’s bogey-free effort.

“My caddie and I have a phrase called ’10/10′ which means give 100 percent on the preparation for each shot and 100 perfect on the execution,” said Jamal. “I gave all I had to each and it paid off coming down the stretch.”

First and second round leader Byran Wise also finished birdie-birdie to shoot 2-under 70 and take solo 2nd at 10-under. His playing partner Patrick Murphy finished with three birdies for a 71 and a solo third place. Cal Bear Collin Morikawa tied with Jamal for the round of the day with a 66 that jumped him into a tie for 4th place with Lee Gearhart, Brandon Bauman, and Ben Corfee.

This year’s State Fair showcased players from a handful of top division one programs including Stanford, Cal Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Davis. For many of these players the State Fair provides an opportunity to prepare for or earn a roster spot in their upcoming fall season tournaments.
